How to get rid of spam quick in your Gmail inbox.

Spam is inevitable. And, you can’t always keep it out of your email inbox. Sometimes you go away on vacation or just forget to check your email box for a week and when you return, your inbox is congested with all kinds of unwanted ads. Fortunately there is an easy solution. I’ve found a very simple and ingenious way to deal with the nasty problem of SPAM.

This trick helps you easily find and erase hundreds of unwanted emails with just a few clicks of your mouse. No more endless hours spent wading through your email box looking for SPAM and other unwanted mail.

Here’s a tip that I use every week to get my Gmail and Yahoo email inbox organized. I wanted to share it just in case it would help you as well.

1. Login to your email account.

2. Enter a specific search term into your email search box and all emails containing that word will come up.

For instance, if you wanted to get rid of all emails sent to me by Netflix, then you’d enter the word, Netflix, into the email search box.

If you wanted to get rid of all SPAM marketing type emails, then you’d enter a word or phrase like “get rich” (without quotes) or “make money or “buy now”. These types of words are often used in SPAM type emails. A list of emails containing the phrase will appear. If you’re plagued with unwanted SPAM emails, you may see hundreds or thousands of emails in your search list.

To quickly get rid of them, choose “Select All” and delete. You could also simply move the emails to a folder of their own.

You can even enter the email address of a particular person or sender and all email received from that person will appear. This is a super quick way to get rid of old email marketing newsletters to which you no longer subscribe.

This tip works for any type of email system, including Gmail and Yahoo as long as you can use the “search mail” function. I’ve even used this on my AOL email accounts, too. Best of luck. Let me know how it works out for you. And, please feel free to post a tip for dealing with SPAM or getting your email inbox organized.

Antivirus Download Sites

Antivirus softwares come in either paid or free versions. Both work well but with some differences in terms of features and options available to the user. If you are on a budget, then you can opt to download the free versions of the regular paid antivirus software. The free version might come with a little less features but it will work as well as the paid one. On the other hand, if you have the cash to spare then you should definitely go for the paid versions. Why? This is because you will be given to access to more features as well as the special options being offered. You can download antivirus software at the company website. It’s usually the same company that developed the software; however, there are some antivirus software that are being distributed in other sites. Most of the time it’s because that certain website is reviewing a free version of that software and offers direct links to their readers this is only commonly done on free softwares so never ever pay and download for an antivirus software if it’s displayed on a non-company related website. Most likely it would turn out to be a scam.

So now that you know where you can get antivirus software, we should talk about what you must look for when deciding on which one to get. After all, there are numerous antivirus softwares available and they all have a unified claim of being the best. Basically, you wouldn’t want to spend money on an outdated software that is absolutely useless against newer viruses. Remember, new viruses crop up on a weekly or perhaps even on a daily basis so it’s recommended that you choose an antivirus software that will protect your PC against all old and new viruses. So when buying antivirus software, consider the following:

1. Does the antivirus software give you 2 levels of protection? Many of the available antivirus softwares would detect and the clean away all the viruses from your PC when you run a scan. So check if your software has the same kind of protection.

2. How effective has it been with cleaning up all the infected files on your PC? Does it quarantine or remove all the infected files efficiently? It’s very important that your chosen antivirus is very effective in cleaning out all the infected files to put an end to the chance of it spreading to other files or worse, another PC.

3. Is it very easy to use? Of course, not all of us have backgrounds on IT and as such, we require something that is very simple in terms of user interface and doesn’t require too much to be able to function well. You want it to clean up your PC not learn how it works.

4. Does your chosen antivirus software come with free updates from the website? Even free ones have regular free updates. So check if the company offers regular updates for free, remember that new viruses are always on the rise and as such you want to keep your antivirus software updated.

5. Does the company offer you with great online support for some of your technical difficulties? Are they fast and helpful with responding to even your most mundane questions? A company that provides total support towards their clientele is a great thing.

So there you have it, some ideas about antivirus download sites, what to watch out for and what to look for when choosing an antivirus for you computer.

Software reviews: Symantec Norton Antivirus (2008) – Part 1

July 29, 2009 · Posted in Antivirus · Comment

Symantec has made a name for its business by using the Norton Antivirus System. For several years Symantec has dedicated their business to supplying their customers with the best quality technology. This year, it’s Norton Antivirus 2008.

This Norton Antivirus system a key technological tool is part of a series that encompasses Antispyware, Internet Worm Protection, Rootkit Detection, and Antivirus. Since cyberspace threats are always changing and updating, so is Norton Antivirus to keep your computer running at an optimal speed. This 300 MB program for the Windows XP and Vista is designed for keeping your PC safe by preventing viruses from hijacking it.

Blocking virus-infected emails, protecting out-going emails and instant messaging, blocking spyware and worms, and detecting hidden threats and removing them from the computer Norton Antivirus has added even more features on top of these to the 2008 edition. By building off the previous installment (Norton Antivirus 2007), Symantec has added several new features to make the series better than ever.

New features include faster scans thanks to an improved performance rate, a one-click-away access to technological and customer support, a network map that allows a view of your home network, and a drastic noise reduction while Norton Antivirus toils away (which is nice to those that are frequent computer users).

The significance of the added network monitoring creates a network security administrator out of the user. With Norton Antivirus, the user is able to monitor other computers on their network and the computers’ safety. One can also manage other Norton Antivirus 2008 (or Norton’s Internet Security) installed on the network’s computers. This feature also allows the user to update and run scans on those other computers very useful in a business or families with more than one computer. This feature protects not only one computer but potentially the entire network. However, for this feature to work, the other computers must have Norton Antivirus 2008 installed on them too.

Two other important features for Norton Antivirus users is the new Browser Defender that covers known vulnerabilities in Internet Explorer and blocks malicious websites from exploiting them. The second feature keeps malware from instant messaging out of your PC. Avid internet surfers and internet chatters would be hard pressed to find another defense more solid than that of Norton Antivirus 2008.

-If you don’t mind switching email addresses, sign up for Gmail or Yahoo Mail. These two do a good job of re-routing spam into a bulk mail folder. From there you can simply hit a “Delete all” button. Much better than combing through your inbox to find the little critters. Gmail even offers “Spam recipes” at the top of the page. (French Fry Spam casserole anyone?)

- Forward “unwanted or deceptive spam” to spam@uce.gov. This address is maintained by the FTC.

-If you participate in a lot of surveys, offers, sweepstakes, “punch the monkey and win $20″ or any other thing of that ilk, stop. This is contributing to the mass majority of your mail.

-When filling out ANY form online, watch for radio and checkboxes that ask about newsletters and forwarding your email address to any company.

-If you can help it, don’t give your email address to anyone that you don’t have to.

-If you absolutely MUST give your email address out, but you are wary of how the receiver will use it, give out a disposable email address. Take a minute out of the day to set up another email address simply for this purpose.

Follow these simple steps and spam won’t bother you ever again.

Computers Are No Match for Human Passion

July 28, 2009 · Posted in Spam · Comment

Much coverage has been given in the past about how computer programs can challenge some of the best chess players in the world. From playing to a draw, these computers have progressed to such a stage where they handily defeat these great human players. In the final analysis though, it is still the human behind the programming who should be given credit for being able to harness the computer’s power by mixing in artificial intelligence and thus making these machines almost think like humans.

Artificial intelligence (AI) has been around for some time now. One of the areas that computer programmers have been applying AI is in the field of writing. Imagine the joy of the average high school student if they could get their computers to write their essays for them. Imagine too just how intellectually deprived these students eventually will become but that will be a topic for another time.

One way of teaching the computer to write is to feed it prior written material, maybe a news column or article. What the computer will do is to rewrite or paraphrase the entire article–move some paragraphs or sentences around, change certains words but always trying to maintain the essence of the article. Most of the time, the computers fail miserably especially with lengthy articles. The output is mostly gibberish and the thoughts are out of synch.

If you need proof of how devoid of sense the computer generated articles are, you need only look in your emails. Every now and then you might receive a spam email where the body of the emails consists of about three or four paragraphs of mumbo jumbo. Each sentence probably makes sense individually. Put them all together and try to make sense of it though will only give you a headache. These are examples of computer generated writings.

There are nefarious forces around who are trying very hard to improve the abilities of these kinds of programs in order for them to come up with more sensible content. Their intention is to be able to profit off the hard work of others by using their article generating software to basically copy previously written materials and then present the altered finished product as their own. There are some websites that are already touting the advancements of their software. As everyone knows by now, writing articles on the internet translates to more targetted traffic to one’s website and that means more exposure for your product. So a software that can churn out an article in less than five minutes could mean a windfall in the long run for these lazy mules.

While computer generated articles may not be in the mainstream yet, surely a discerning reader can tell. An author who writes from the heart will pack that extra punch in his/her article. The passion to write with the intent of informing, educating, entertaining, telling an exciting story, and tickling the mind will definitely stand head and shoulder above all else. If you just pick a name of a popular author, ask yourself what makes you buy that particular author’s books. Without a doubt, time and effort and the proverbial blood, sweat and tears have been poured into the production of their wonderful stories.

The same can be said for internet articles. No computer generated, assembly-line article or story is going to be able to deliver the same product as one that is driven by passion. Webmasters always advise newcomers on the scene that “content is king.” There are many who are of the mentality that in order to succeed on the internet, you have to “be there” first. And in their desperation to “be there” first, they would employ even underhanded measures to achieve their goals. When the motive for writing an article or producing a website is purely for monetary gains, the content is most likely very shallow as well. Authors who spend the time to think and research ahead of their articles are the ones who will eventually be rewarded not just in monterary terms, but also through respect. Such is the reward for passion.

Software reviews: Norton AntiVirus 2008 – Part 1

Bad Things, Big Packages

Norton AntiVirus 2008, like its predecessors, is just another big name product that delivers no-name results. When I first owned a computer it was Norton programs that were protecting my information and my PC. Now I rely on free anti-virus software, as I get the same quality without the brand name prices. Norton AntiVirus 2008 is not worth my $40.00, nor is it worth yours.

Although it does and perhaps always will provide good virus protection the file size is unusually large for anti virus software. It does not support Firefox (only IE), which in my opinion is entirely essential of any product such as this. It does not support more recent versions of popular Instant Messaging software either such as AIM or Yahoo IM.

Norton AntiVirus 2008 fails in helping its users to understand the interface and configurations. Little is explained for the average novice or intermediate computer user. The interface is dark and plain and if first impressions are everything then the developers failed here as well.

I give Norton AntiVirus a 3 out of 5. The potential is there, if you’re an IT Tech that is.

How to fight spam – Part 4

July 26, 2009 · Posted in Spam · Comment

Before going to discussion on “How to fight spam” we will see that what is the Spam? We can define it as electronic junk mail or junk newsgroup postings. Some people define spam even more generally as any unsolicited e-mail. However, if a long-lost brother finds your e-mail address and sends you a message, this could hardly be called spam, even though it’s unsolicited. Real spam is generally e-mail advertising for some product sent to a mailing list or newsgroup. In addition to wasting people’s time with unwanted e-mail, spam also eats up a lot of network bandwidth. Consequently, there are many organizations, as well as individuals, who have taken it upon themselves to fight spam with a variety of techniques. But because the Internet is public, there is really little that can be done to prevent spam, just as it is impossible to prevent junk mail. However, some online services have instituted policies to prevent spammers from spamming their subscribers.

Through various techniques we can protect our network from spam as:

1. Spam is the electronic world’s biggest problem. A fool proof method of filtering out spam does not yet exist, but we don’t have to sit back and take it. Anti-Spam pages like this one make spamming less profitable and is our way to help FIGHT SPAM.

2. When a spammer’s program visits your web page, they will check all the pages that you link to for email addresses. So, all you have to do is link to this page and whenever a spammer’s program scans your page, they will be sucked into this one. To link to this page use this simple code:

Anti Spam

3. For those of you that don’t want to read all the details and are ready to jump right into the web security audit, then follow the five steps below; however, I highly recommend you read all the intrusion prevention material on this page before doing so.

Take our Firewall Test, it’s fast and very accurate.

Take our Anonymous Surfing and privacy test.

Test your Intrusion Prevention Software.

Take our Popup Test.

Visit our Web Security Resources for great products that help secure your system!

Almost all of these have been written by myself and I have gone to great lengths to make it understandable by just about anyone. If, when reading, you find Anti-Spam tips that could be worded in a form that would make more sense, please let me know.

How insurers profit from fears of identity theft

Insurer profit from identity theft

The insurance industry has grown for decades. Every problem has an insurance answer. We insure our homes, lives, automobiles and now our identity. These professional gamblers examine the problem and believe their insurance product can bet the odds. Now insurance companies sell insurance policies against identity theft.

Insurance Company Operation

The insurance industry operates as organized gambling. Underwriters determine the risk and if the risk is low, the company grants an insurance policy. The intention remains to pay out no more than the person paid in premiums for the insurance policy. The company offers peace of mind as there product. If the risk were low for the insurance company, would the risk remain low for policyholders as well? Is feat proving profitable?

Identity Theft Scenario

A health card insurance card arrived in the mailbox, but did not get in the house. The thieves took out the health insurance card and identified the social security number as the account number. The thief applied for several credit cards and received substantial balance because of past good credit. The thieves enjoy a shopping spree. A furniture store denies application for credit because of a default on a credit application. A credit review determined the defaulted accounts were not yours. You began the fight to right the wrong. At the same time, insurance companies were advertising their new product. With the insurance if you identity theft is stolen the insurance company works to restore your identity and compensate you for any expense. What is their gamble?

Profit Factor

Much information is out to train citizens how to avoid identity theft. There are locks to the mailboxes, information on how to avoid phishing emails and protection of our credit cards in the markets. One risk remains social security cards remain at home, as recommended but many Health Insurance Company and Medicare use the Social Security Number as account number. Try checking into a hospital or doctor’s office without your insurance card. The doctor’s office will not take the risk and you will end of paying the bill and chasing down a reimbursement. All true risk remains with the individual.

Everyone has a story of himself or herself or a friend who had to fight identity theft and the fear grows, but has the education minimized the fear enough for the insurance companies to offer a product. Could we accomplish the reimbursement for ourselves? The insurance company compensates the individuals for their loss, then works for reimbursement, and receives reimbursement for their expense.

Insurers and insurance companies profit from fear of identity theft.
