Amazon.com Review
O brave new world, that has such hostile cookies in’t! Some look at the troubles Internet users face–thanks to viruses, bad applets, and those darn hostile cookies–and decide that this World Wide Web business just isn’t worth it. Fortunately, there’s good guys out there too. Sleep well at night knowing that McAfee Guard Dog is guarding your Little House on the Internet from harm.

This sleek, inexpensive, easy-to-use package checks all incoming files (including e-mail messages, now one of the most common routes of transmission for computer diseases) against the legendary McAfee database of viruses, but then goes further. It sets up a firewall to make sure your Internet portal is exit-only. Unless you say otherwise, no outsiders can take advantage of your connection to check out your hard drive or leave nasty surprises. Finally, it watches your browser sessions for files sent by remote sites that might maliciously change your data or settings or take up residence on your hard drive and cause problems down the road. Your privacy and security are endangered each time you log on to the Net–make sure you have McAfee Guard Dog watching your back. –Rob LightnerAmazon.com Product Description

Intel sells anti-virus business, waits 12 years, buys anti-virus business

August 19, 2010 · Posted in McAfee, Symantec · Comment

McAfee and Intel
The big news in the IT security industry today is the announcement that Intel plans to acquire McAfee for a jaw-dropping $7.68 billion.

Yes, that’s “billion”. Oh to have such pocket money.

Of course, those of us with long memories will know that Intel is no stranger to the computer security industry.

Indeed they used to have their own anti-virus product (Intel LanDesk Virus Protect) which they sold to Symantec in 1998.

Symantec acquires Intel anti-virus

Now, Intel is purchasing Symantec’s arch-enemy McAfee and re-entering the business.

It’s like they’re dancing the hokey-cokey. # You put your left leg in, your left leg out, in out in out, and you shake it all about… #

It’s too early to say what the impact of this acquisition will mean to McAfee’s customers, but there will no doubt be some happy McAfee shareholders today as the price rises to its highest level since the late 1990s.

Evaluating Antivirus programs – Part 5

July 26, 2010 · Posted in McAfee · Comment

All anti-virus programs are not the same and making purchasing decisions based on opinions (not facts) could put you at risk.

So which anti-virus (AV) program is best for you? It really depends on who you talk to, but should it? Ever since the advent of anti-virus, debates have raged as to which program is best and most of the time you get plenty of subjective opinions. We all have our opinions, but believe it or not there is significant science to the evaluation of anti-virus programs.

NOTE: This article is written with desktop and server anti-virus in mind. Enterprise management i.e. McAfee ePO, Symantec Corporate Edition, et al. is outside of the scope of this article.

The Science

The science of evaluating anti-virus programs is based on two main criteria; features and effectiveness.

Features

The anti-virus software market is more competitive than it has ever been. Some vendors offer a plethora of features in their offerings to attract more customers. Most people don’t even know what some of these features are or what they do, but there are some features that are important to look for during an evaluation of anti-virus programs.

OS Support

Does the anti-virus program fully support the operating system that it is intended to be used on? Sounds obvious don’t it? It does, but take Windows Vista for instance. Has the anti-virus program been designed for Windows Vista and has the program been tested and/or certified on this platform?

Automatic Updates

Can updates be downloaded manually and/or automatically?

Most people have better things to do than to make sure that anti-virus programs are updated regularly. This is a “must have” for a good anti-virus program. An added benefit is configurable automatic updates, allowing updates on a specific schedule.

On-Access Scanning

This is another critical feature. The on-access scan engine needs to start as early in the boot process as possible and files must be checked the instant there is any interaction with them.

On-Demand Scan

Is there an option to conduct a “deep scan” of files, folder, or drives when needed? All good anti-virus programs have this feature, but it is important to mention as a requirement anyway. It is also important that the anti-virus program allows for the scanning of removable media and network drives.

Heuristics

Heuristics’ describes the method of analyzing the code of a file to ascertain whether it contains code typical of a virus. Anti-virus

Antivirus Software – Get The Bugs Before They Get You!

July 17, 2010 · Posted in McAfee · Comment

You turn on your computer, and it doesn’t look quite right. Maybe your icons have changed, or the background picture is wrong. Some options are disabled. Even worse, you may not be able to boot your computer up at all. Guess what – it’s probably got a virus.

In today’s online world, protecting your computer from all the nasty things online is vital. Viruses can cause obvious issues, as described above, but they can also run silently in the background, propagating themselves across your computer and transferring on to the computers of people you know. Mostly, you only know you have a virus when substantial damage has already been done.

Some common signs of a virus include:

- Programs working erratically

- Computer locks up

- Greyed out options

- The browser home page has changed

- Icons have changed

- Difficulties starting up the computer

There is a solution! Antivirus software is readily available, and the good ones are very efficient at dealing with viruses in all their many and varied mutations. Basically, if you’re online, you need this type of software.

So which one do you choose? For starters, be careful of using something free off the internet, particularly if it’s one you’ve never heard of. Sometimes these programs are a way of implanting more viruses on your computer. Some of the better known brands give you the option of doing a free scan online, which is useful, but not a long term solution.

It’s really important to choose well-known antivirus software. Ask friends, or someone computer savvy, for their recommendations. It may be worth visiting a computer store and buying it there, rather than online – after all, if they’ve gone to the trouble of stocking it, it’s most likely an established and trusted product.

There are plenty of good brands available, far too numerous to list here, but some of the best known are from McAfee, Norton and Trend. Check out the support available to you – can you contact someone if you have trouble installing the software?

Most importantly, make sure there’s an easy way to update the software on a regular basis (preferably as part of the purchase cost!). For example, my antivirus software pops up a little box every time an upgrade is available. I click okay, and it’s automatically downloaded to my computer. Viruses change and develop at an alarming rate, so it’s vital to keep your antivirus software up to date.

Finally, the all-important backup! The word “backup” tends to produce the same glassy eyed response as the word “budget”, but it really is an essential part of being online. Regularly backup your important files to CD or DVD. If you’re a business user, an automated and frequent backup process is vital. Once a virus has destroyed your computer, it’s too late.

Being online is wonderful, but don’t let it become a nightmare. Antivirus software will play a vital role in keeping your online experience a positive one.

Mcafee Office 2000

Product Description
The all in one solution to protect optimize and repair your PC. Powerful, award winning desktop utility programs.Amazon.com Review
Every office has its utility closets, where vital machinery labors away in anonymity, and McAfee 2000 Office Pro provides that same behind-the-scenes service to Windows machines. This suite of utilities combines several popular McAfee products (formerly sold separately) into one package with a single convenient interface. The utilities include:

  1. McAfee VirusScan, for keeping malicious software off your machine. VirusScan incorporates VShield, which monitors your system’s configuration for changes brought about by uncataloged viruses.
  2. McAfee Utilities, a suite unto itself, which catches disk errors, speeds backups, allows easy Registry modifications, and presents a better picture of your machine’s hardware configuration than the one Windows provides.
  3. McAfee First Aid 2000, which provides a central interface for (among other things) undoing troublesome software installations and configuration changes.
  4. McAfee Uninstaller, which you can use to strip out unwanted programs and their deadwood library files to save disk space.
  5. McAfee Y2K Survival Kit, for scanning your system for references to potentially problematic two-digit year references.
  6. McAfee Oil Change, which makes it easier to scan software publishers’ Internet sites for program updates and new drivers.
  7. McAfee Guard Dog, which helps protect your machine from bad-news Internet software and alert you to occasions when your programs secretly send information out via the network.

Plus, this suite comes with PGP Security Suite, which puts a user-friendly face on Pretty Good Privacy and public-key cryptography. With PGP security, you can encrypt data and have some assurance that the parties you exchange it with really are who they claim to be.

Overall, McAfee Office 2000 Pro represents a worthwhile buy. Its antivirus services are some of the best on the market, and the McAfee Utilities (formerly sold as the acclaimed Nuts & Bolts) really do help most machines perform more speedily. Not everyone needs PGP protection, but the McAfee PGP tools do their jobs and are nice to have around. Pick up this suite, optimize your system with it every few months, and, in the meantime, enjoy the protection of VirusScan and First Aid. –David WallAmazon.com Product Description

    Looking at scam sites

    July 4, 2010 · Posted in McAfee · Comment

When you come across a site that looks questionable you should always check to make sure it is not a scam site. There are several ways of doing this.

If you use the McAfee antivirus package it comes with a program called SiteAdvisor. SiteAdvisor tests most websites and if the site isn’t tested they have an option to submit the site for testing.

SiteAdvisor has 4 indicators. Grey for a site that isn’t tested, Green for safe sites, Yellow for objectionable sites and Red for unsafe sites. When you go to a red site a balloon will appear telling you why the site is unsafe. Spammy emails. unsafe downloads & scam claims are among the top reasons for “red” sites.

Also you can check out the SiteAdvisor page if you don’t have McAfee. This is a page where users can report sites they have had bad experiences with whether it is that they downloaded viruses or they were scammed. So if you want to know if a site is a scam you will find feedback on the SiteAdvisor page.

Other antivirus programs also use similar programs. Also you can check out the Better Business Bureau to see if there are claims of fraud about certain websites.
